If 2008 was the year of my obsession with James McAvoy, 2009 is the year of Robert Pattinson — or should I say Edward Cullen. After reading the Twilight series and seeing the movie, I have a full-on vampire crush. That wild hair. Those serious eyes. That intensity. Sigh.

The chemistry between Edward and his human soul-mate, Bella, has actually induced a bit a jealous in this grown girl. Their passion hurts my heart a little because it makes me think of — and miss — J.

Isn’t this all so silly? It’s just (poorly written) teen fiction, for goodness sake!

Monday through Friday the TV is always on. My days begin with the Today Show and end with reruns of Scrubs. During the afternoon I usually watch a couple of episodes of Law & Order.

I feel less alone when the television is on. The noise and the colors are comforting and fill the house with activity. But I end up getting sucked in and, as a result, spend too many hours stuck on the couch and not enough hours being productive.

So today I’m banning TV from the house. Instead, I’m going to attempt to tackle the following items on my To Do list:

1. Wash, dry, fold and put away laundry

2. Organize my office

3. Finish reading New Moon

4. Run the dishwasher

If all goes well (meaning I don’t succumb to loneliness), perhaps I’ll keep the television off tomorrow, too.

I had lunch with a friend yesterday who brought with her Twilight by Stephenie Meyer for me to borrow.  I’m very interested to see what the hype is all about.  If I can finish it by the weekend (and I can’t imagine that I won’t–after all, it is a book for teenagers), she and I will go see the movie together with all the tweens and pre-teens in Omaha.

Have you read the Twilight series? What did you think? Will you be seeing the movie?

Nobody puts Baby in the corner… on Broadway?

Can you believe that J’s never seen this classic? I can’t even count the number of times I watched it as a kid–not having any idea that Penny’s “stomach problem” was the result of an illegal abortion. She was actually my favorite character in the movie. I thought Cynthia Rhodes was so beautiful. Whatever happened to her?

What did you think about tonight’s Emmy Awards?  I thought they were terribly boring and that the five nominated reality-show hosts were awful at award-show hosting–especially Howie Mandel.  I wanted to slap him and Jeff Probst (who shouldn’t have won–I was rooting for Tom Bergeron) every time they opened their mouths.

Best line 1:

“What if I just kept talking for 12 minutes? That was the opening!”

— Jeremy Piven

Best line 2:

To paraphrase… “Why are they all standing? Is it a Jewish holiday?”

–Don Rickles (upon receiving a standing ovation)

My dad sent me an email linking to a USA Today article about the new “Dancing with the Stars” line-up and wrote:

A very weird collection of “stars.” I can’t believe Cloris Leachman is 82. If she dies on camera, I’ll be very upset.

Oh, dear.
