Happy Monday, my friends!
I hope you all had wonderful weekends. Did you get a lot done, or did you do a lot of relaxing? J and I had a very busy weekend. Since he just got back on Tuesday, there were people to see and things to do, including house hunting! I’m sure he would have preferred we wait until after our honeymoon to start looking at houses, but I convinced him we should start our search now. I’ve waited all summer for this!
The good news is that we’re in no rush to leave our apartment. We’re on a month-to-month lease right now. The bad news is that we might be staying in our apartment for a while. Of the 10+ houses we saw over two days, there were only two that we liked… and one of them was out of our budget.
In the area of town that we’d like to live, most homes in our price range were built in the mid-60s — and haven’t been updated since. We saw some truly ugly houses and quite a few smelled musty or like old people. One reeked so badly of cigarette smoke that we had to turn around and walk out before we even made it through the foyer. To be honest, it was a bit discouraging.
Here’s what we’re looking for in a house:
- 3+ bedrooms (master, guest and office)
- 3+ bathrooms (downstairs, upstairs and master)
- 2-car garage
- Updated kitchen with a pantry
- Fenced-in backyard
- Close to the interstate (so J doesn’t have a terribly long commute)
On our “would be nice” list:
- Master bathroom with two sinks
- Walk-in closet in the master bedroom
- Finished (or partially finished) basement
- Deck large enough for a grill and patio furniture
Our search continues Wednesday afternoon. Wish us luck!

do you watch Property Virgins (or any of the other shows that focus on first-time buyers) on HGTV? Very enlightening on what to expect…I will cross my fingers that you find everything on your lists!
As a self-proclaimed addict, I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t watched HGTV in a while! I’ll have to TiVO that show and House Hunters, which I used to watch regularly.
Good luck! I agree, two sinks in the master bath is a must.
